About Palaiochora

Paleohora (Paliohora) is the second biggest town of southern Crete after Ierapetra. The town located almost at the southwestern end of the island has approx. 1.000 inhabitants. The only way to reach Paleohora is from Chania, a trip to 75km of good asphalt road. Regular public transportation is available for visiting Paleohora.

People are occupied with tourism, olive cultivation, fishing, and lately tomato production in greenhouses Traditional weaving is also developed. There are many small beaches especially on the west side of the town. The city is a popular resort so there are many hotels, apartments, rooms to rent, restaurants, taverns, bars and a camping site. During the summer small ships provide a tour to the beaches around the island and other small villages like Sfakia, Sougia, Loutro, and Elafonissi.

CUISINE

Visitors will find plentiful fresh and cheap fish, olive oil, honey, dairy products, local traditional pies (called calitsounia), traditional sweets and cakes. Also, you can try salads, seafood, tasty omelets with many ingredients, escargot, spicy cheeses, vegetable, and fruit. And be sure to try tsikoudia, the very strong local drink.
